Artist Statement
In the project, “Walls of Staunton,” I invite viewers to explore the subtle beauty and rich narratives embedded in the exterior walls of our town’s old historic and not so historic buildings. Each image captures the unique textures, patterns, and imperfections that tell stories of resilience and history, echoing the lives that have unfolded around them.
The walls in this project, often overlooked by both locals and tourists as we amble by them, are canvases that reflect the passage of time. Crumbling bricks, peeling paint, and weathered surfaces embody a spirit of place, inviting contemplation about the layers of life that they have witnessed. Through my lens, I seek to highlight not just the physical characteristics of these structures, but also the emotional resonance they carry.
As you journey through this exhibition, I hope you find yourself immersed in the stories these walls hold and consider the beauty of decay as a vital part of our shared history. In appreciating these surfaces, we recognize the artistry inherent in the ordinary and the remarkable tales waiting to be told.
The “Walls...” project is a precursor, and in many ways the inspiration for, my “Seams” project, which covers similar themes but is embodied by way of platinum & palladium prints and extends the environment wider than just Staunton.
